The Track of the Sands, also known as the Quarry Rail, was originally developed to transport rare minerals out of nearby mines. It is operated by the Imperial Freight Company, owned by the richest man in the empire, Reginald Gilder. After decades of operation, the Track of the Sands has become an increasingly important overland freight rout,.transporting vast quantities of industrial and military supplies every year. However, perhaps because the track is known to be owned by a very rich man, many more remote spots on the track are targeted for ambush by raiders hoping to steal the goods and ransom the train staff.
